As South Pacific trade winds rocked the boat, the vessel drifted out of Opunohu Bay, surrounded by lush jungle, volcanic remnants, and the dramatic landscape of Moorea’s north shore. Off the port side, a pod of spinner dolphins put on an aerial display, while to starboard, a glide of flying fish took flight, showcasing their defiance of aerodynamics as the boat made its way to the open sea.

Captain Tama, scanning the outer reef for the main attraction, suddenly pointed to a distant figure in the choppy waters. “Right there, right there – he popped up right in front of them!” he exclaimed, as a male humpback whale breached at 11 o’clock. This was French Polynesia, a place where mana, the spiritual force that connects all living things from mountains to sea, was ever-present. Relaxing in the stern, there was trust that the day would bring some aquatic magic.

French Polynesia, a collection of 118 islands and atolls spread across an area more than half the size of Europe, had already exceeded the idyllic vision often seen on magazine covers. The journey began on sun-drenched Bora Bora, where the spectacular beauty of the island chain was evident from the moment of arrival. After landing, travelers en route to the Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora were quickly revitalized as the yacht cruised across an ethereal lagoon to a palm-dotted motu. The ocean’s vibrant hue left one guest in disbelief, and the extinct volcano, Mount Otemanu, stood majestically in the background, its green peak resembling a church steeple stretching towards the heavens. Bora Bora’s ancient name, pora pora mai te pora, meaning “created by the gods” in Tahitian, seemed perfectly fitting.

In just 48 hours, experiences had included diving with manta rays, pufferfish, and hawksbill turtles, grafting coral with a WiseOceans marine biologist, and enjoying a taurumi-style massage designed to align the body with the ocean’s flow. A particularly memorable moment was the cannonball splashes from the deck of an overwater bungalow, an experience that humorously countered any claims that these iconic abodes were “cliché” or “annoying.”

While enjoying dinner at the Four Seasons’ Vaimiti restaurant, a conversation about a whale-watching experience sparked anticipation for the next adventure on Moorea, the heart-shaped island known for its high success rate of humpback whale sightings. Although encounters with various whale species had occurred in other locations, this was an opportunity to swim with humpback whales, a dream that had long been held.

French Polynesia is one of the few places in the world where swimming with humpback whales is possible. These gentle giants, protected by marine sanctuaries and strict government regulations, migrate thousands of miles from Antarctica to the warmer waters of French.

Polynesia between July and November to give birth, rest, and nurse their young. The distinctive underwater songs of male humpbacks can be heard for miles, a haunting and beautiful sound that filled the boat when Captain Tama lowered a hydrophone into the water.

As the boat slowed to a stop, it was time to enter the water. Per regulations, boats must stay at least 100 yards from the whales, and swimmers are not allowed to approach them. With excitement and a bit of selective listening, the snorkelers eagerly jumped into the deep blue, hoping to witness these majestic creatures up close.

After a ten-minute search in the cooler-than-expected water, a faint white shadow began to twirl upward from the depths. Slowly, a mother humpback whale and her calf emerged, rising to the surface for a breath of air before diving back into the deep. The experience was electrifying, leaving snorkelers with smiles on their faces and a sense of awe at the incredible encounter. For one participant, it was a moment of completion, but for others, it was just the beginning of a deeper connection with the natural world of French Polynesia.
